Be gentle with yourself, you’re doing the best you can

Yesterday I was triggered by this quote I read on Pinterest: “Be gentle with yourself, you’re doing the best you can”, and it inspired me to write a blog around this true sentence. Very often I don’t realize this enough.

I always thought myself to be a person with confidence and a great belief in myself. But apparently, there were (and are) a few more things that I needed to learn about loving and accepting myself. We need to accept ourselves as we are, flaws and all.

As we go through life, challenges arise to help us keep growing. We’re human and we have layers. Just when we think we’ve learned something, life comes along and shows us there’s more. Part of life – as I recently found out again :-) Here are some tips that I recently learned and have helped me:

1. Observe your thoughts and emotions.

Awareness is the first step in acknowledging any life challenge. Asking yourself some important questions can help you understand why you are having such a profound response to something. Be honest. It’s the only way to find out what’s really beneath it all. How are you responding to a particular event, circumstance, or person? What are your initial feelings? And why are you feeling this way?

2. Don’t be so hard on yourself. 

Everyone gets rejected, says the wrong things and experiences failure. When it happens to you, there is no reason to be so hard on yourself. You don’t have to be your own worst enemy. Beating up on yourself doesn’t get you anywhere. No matter what, you will always be a person of value! Choose to be gentle on yourself and look for the lesson. What went wrong? How can you do things differently next time? Grow forward and learn from it.

3. Shift the focus back to you.

Our outer world is a reflection of what’s going on within us because we project our own thoughts and feelings onto other people and events. We give it our own meaning. We can’t change other people, the past, or circumstances out of our control. All we can change is ourselves. Shift your focus back onto yourself. Realize that you have the power to learn from it and change your approach the next time.

4. Accept what you cannot change.

I know it’s easy to resist your circumstances, and blame other people and events. Sometimes we just have to accept it, breathe through it, don’t overthink, and know that this is happening because it’s time for us to grow.

Last but not least – as a reminder  :-) “note to self: I am doing the best I can with what I have in this moment. And that’s all I can expect .. of anyone, including me!
